Some subscribe to the cosmological argument, which poses that something cannot arise from anything; hence God must have created the universe. Some people believe in the teleological argument that suggests a purposeful and beneficial universe arrangement, reflecting Christian harmony and intelligence. For instance, the distance between the moon and the Earth controls the tides, and the perfect axis of the Earth indicates the existence of a master designer.
To understand God’s essence, one must examine His attributes, which refer to the qualities and characteristics that define His nature. These attributes provide us with a glimpse into the divine essence, allowing us to know and relate to God on a deeper level. They serve as building blocks in our theological understanding and appreciation of God’s uniqueness, holiness, and love. Let us examine four attributes of God and their connection to scripture.
The attribute of omnipotence indicates that God is mighty and has unlimited control over all creation. He is capable of achieving anything by His divine plan. “When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless” (ESV Genesis 17:1). “Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you” (ESV Jeremiah 32:17). When we comprehend God’s omnipotence, we can have faith in His sovereignty and depend on His strength during challenging times. This understanding assures us that He can keep His promises and that there is nothing beyond His control.
The second attribute of God is omniscience, which means He possesses complete and flawless knowledge of everything, including the past, present, and future. “Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure” (ESV Psalm 147:5). “Declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose” (ESV Isaiah 46:10). The fact that God is all-knowing brings comfort, as we can trust that He understands our innermost thoughts, desires, and needs. This knowledge also gives us confidence in His perfect plans and the assurance that He will guide us with wisdom and understanding.

God’s steadfast love brings security and peace of mind in uncertain times.
The final attribute of God is that love is central to God’s nature. It demonstrates His affectionate and compassionate nature towards His creation, especially humanity. “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love” (ESV 1 John 4:8). “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (ESV Romans 5:8). God’s love changes us, connects us, and gives us comfort. It motivates us to love and help others.
