As we approach the beginning of a new year, it’s common to look back on the one we just finished. The year 2023 was a journey that included various challenges, triumphs, and lessons that helped shape us into the people we are today. It is time to let go of the past and embrace the possibilities in 2024, not looking back or dwelling on the things of 2023.“Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62 ESV).
Closing one door and opening another is not just a symbolic symbol of time passing. It is an invitation to embrace change, growth, and new beginnings. As we enter 2024, it is essential to approach it with a mindset that goes beyond the ordinary and mirrors the faith demonstrated by Peter when he walked on water.
According to the Gospel of Matthew (14:29), Peter performed a miraculous feat by walking on water. One stormy day, Peter saw Jesus walking on the turbulent sea and expressed his desire to do the same. Jesus commanded Peter to come, and with faith, Peter stepped out of the boat and onto the water. As long as Peter kept his gaze fixed on Jesus, he could walk above the waves.
This biblical account is an inspirational metaphor for the challenges and opportunities that may come our way in 2024. It invites us to leave our comfort zones and trust in something greater than ourselves. Like Peter, we are called to increase our faith and embrace new beginnings that require courage and belief in the extraordinary.
What does “get out of the boat” mean in 2024?
1. Embrace the Unknown: Stepping out of our comfort zones and facing the unknown takes courage. We acknowledge that growth often happens outside our comfort zones by being open to new experiences, opportunities, and challenges. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9 ESV).
2. Trust in Something Greater: Like Peter’s faith in Jesus allowed him to walk on water, we, too, can navigate the uncertainties of 2024 by trusting in a higher purpose or power. Whether it’s a personal belief, spirituality, or a more significant cause, anchoring ourselves in something beyond our understanding can provide the strength to face any challenge. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5–6 ESV).
3. Learn from Failure: Peter’s moment of doubt led to a brief sinking, but it also became a lesson in resilience and the importance of keeping faith. In 2024, let’s recognize that setbacks are not failures but growth opportunities. Even if it seems like a misstep, each step contributes to the journey. “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28 ESV).
As we begin the new year of 2024, let us carry the wisdom gained from the past year and the courage to face the unknown. Closing the door in 2023 does not mean forgetting the past but instead using the lessons learned to navigate the adventures ahead. May 2024 be a year of steadfast faith, exciting new opportunities, and the bravery to take risks and step out of our comfort zones.
Dear Heavenly Father,
As we approach the beginning of a new year, we come before you with gratitude for the journey of 2023 and excitement for the adventures that await us in 2024. We acknowledge that, like Peter, our faith may falter as we venture into the unknown, but we trust your guidance and strength to see us through.
Lord, please grant us the courage to step out of our comfort zones, embrace new beginnings with open hearts, and trust in your divine plan for our lives. Just as Peter walked on water with his eyes fixed on you, may we, too, keep our focus on your unwavering love and grace.
In times of doubt and uncertainty, remember that setbacks are not defeats but opportunities for growth and resilience. Please help us learn from the past year’s challenges and carry the wisdom gained into the new one.
As we close the door in 2023, we surrender our fears, worries, and regrets into your hands. May your peace, which surpasses all understanding, guard our hearts and minds as we embark on the journey of 2024.
Lord, please increase our faith and strengthen our resolve to face the storms that may come our way. May we walk in your light, guided by the path you have set before us. Bless our old and new endeavors, and let your love shine through every step we take.
We pray all of this in your holy name.
Amen.
